Why asking the browser to resize your images might not be a good idea

If you've played around with web design, you're probably aware that the "img" tag includes an attribute that can tell the browser to resize the image that you send it:

"If the values specified in the width and height attributes are different than the actual dimensions of the graphic, the browser will resize the graphic to match the specified dimensions.  If you specify a percentage value for width and height, the browser will resize the image to the desired proportions."  --Jennifer Niederst, Web Design In a Nutshell, O'Reilly, 1999
Convenient, but not always a good idea.  Now read on...

Sometimes you outsmart yourself

Being on a dialup most of the time, I'm frequently irritated by people who habitually put too many images on their main page.  So the rest is after the jump, where I eat a little crow...

Lost in transmission?

Look closely at the photo in the Attractive property post:
Screenshot, 150%That's a screenshot from from my browser (display set to 1024x768) enlarged to 150%. Note the ripple in the edge of the carpet. Now look at the original:
Original at 150%I don't think that the browser is getting asked to resize the image.

Curious, innit?

Later- Also seeing the same effect on my 800x600 Win98 machine.

Goodie, more stuff to play with

Gee,  no sooner do I mention rotating titles then RocketJones puts up a howto.  Before I activate mine, I'll have to come up with some more cleverness.

And most of the category icons are done.  I used transparent-background PNGs so that if I ever get around to changing the background color they won't be sitting in little white boxes.  The only one left is for "In Passing."  I just spent a couple of hours browsing through my dingbat collection, and nothing seemed suitable.  Right now I'm out of ideas.  Maybe I'll do a temporary one that says "Imagine Icon Here."

Appears that not everyone is seeing the previous page-next page links on the mee.nu sites list.  (More after the jump.)

It's still there, but you'll never find it

Okay, the world didn't explode (where's the kaboom?)-- Good thing.
Both posts are still there, neither disappeared-- Also Good thing.
Both links now point to the newer post-- makes sense.
Bug or misfeature?

Yay!

Okay, let's try something mean:

I note the links to individual posts are of the form "http://[sitename]/[post title].  Let's see what happens if you give the same title to two posts...
