Okay, child pr0n absolutists, is *this* what you wanted?

Three teenage girls who allegedly sent nude or semi-nude cell phone pictures of themselves, and three male classmates in a Greensburg Salem High School who received them, are charged with child pornography.  Police said the girls are 14 or 15, and the boys charged with receiving the photos are 16 or 17...

apparently so...
In the WPXI story, which included contributions from the Associated Press, [Greensburg, Pennsylvania Police Department Captain George] Saranko indicated that authorities decided to file the child pornography charges to send a strong message to other minors who might consider sending such photos to friends.[1]   “It’s very dangerous,” he said.  “Once it’s on a cell phone, that cell phone can be put on the Internet where everyone in the world can get access to that juvenile picture.  You don’t realize what you are doing until it’s already done.” - msnbc.com:  “‘Sexting’ surprise: Teens face child porn charges”
regardless of the consequences...
The mother of a Greensburg Salem High School teenager involved in an alleged “sexting scheme is speaking out, saying her son did nothing wrong. Authorities said three teenage girls allegedly sent nude or semi-nude cell phone pictures of themselves to three male classmates.  Those involved are facing charges, and the mother, who asked to have her identity concealed, said she is outraged...

“This is going to ruin his life,” the boy’s mother said.  “My son did not know this girl. He had seen her around school, and it was texted to him.  He did not take the picture.” - WPXI.COM:  “Mom of Teen Accused in ‘Sexting’ Scheme Speaks Out”
Looks like a great way to “get even” with somebody you might have a grudge against, too.

More media turmoil

On Sunday, John Gorman predicted that this week’s Clear Channel general managers’ meeting at the radio chain’s Dallas HQ will prep the way for more layoffs.  Today’s the last day, so any shoes should be dropping shortly.  Stay (ahem!) tuned.

Yesterday, Jim Hopkins noted new rumors of more cuts at Gannett.

In The Atlantic, Michael Hirschorn wonders if cost pressures will make the “death of print”– in particular, the death of The New York Times– come much more quickly than anyone expected, and asks why the public doesn’t value “high-quality journalism.”

Steven Den Beste:  What high-quality journalism?

Alan Mutter: Why a “larger operating profit, percentage-wise, than Exxon” still isn’t enough for debt-burdened Lee Enterprises.

Plus, Dr. Dobb’s Journal joins PC Magazine in going online-only.

Interesting times, indeed.
