Most of a brand’s sales came from loyal customers, and a very few loyal customers at that. In any single supermarket, for even giant brands like Folgers or Charmin, the destiny lay in the purses of about two hundred customers. Across two hundred stores, therefore, the fate of, say, Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes lay in the hands of about five thousand housewives—out of a customer base of about four million shoppers. If something were to happen to that loyal base—if some mysterious disease were to kill all of them—the brand would die, within a matter of weeks.
Kim Du Toit offers the Republicans some marketing advice.

Right Wing News:
Put very simply: John McCain is a liar. He’s a man without honor, without integrity, who could not have captured the Republican nomination had he run on making comprehensive immigration a top priority of his administration. Quite frankly, this is little different from George Bush, Sr. breaking his “Read my lips, no new taxes†pledge, except that Bush’s father was at least smart enough to wait until he got elected before letting all of his supporters know that he was lying to them.McCain’s problem all along has been that people don’t trust him. His flip-flop-flip on immigration is the canonical reason why.
Under these circumstances, I simply cannot continue to support a man like John McCain for the presidency.

Just when she’s getting ready to head for England.
Go read the story, and leave some good thoughts:
Back when I was a kid, my sister’s tuxedo tomcat disappeared for three weeks, returning home covered with dust, but otherwise none the worse for wear. We never did find out where he’d been.
And, Weasel, props for comforting the shelter kitties.

Indicting the congressional Republicans:
He also has some advice, not that anybody’s listening.Did you think we were asleep while you were doing all this stuff?
- Your party’s standard-bearer going into November is the senator who has stabbed the party faithful in the back more times than we care to remember...
- You introduce legislation which is a “compromise†between a Republican and a liberal Democrat like Ted Kennedy...
- You talk about “immigration reformâ€â€”which we all know is really a disguise for an amnesty for millions of illegal immigrants—and when over 70% of the country’s voters tells you that such legislation is repulsive, you wait awhile, and reintroduce almost the same legislation...
- You made no serious attempt to reform the iniquitous tax code...
- You allowed your original mandate of smaller, frugal government to be corrupted into a free-spending, licentious and lawless atmosphere, where anything was acceptable as long as it wasn’t as bad as what the Democrats were promising...
- The current President (a man who promised to be conservative, and then turned out to be anything but) did not groom a successor while in office... thus leaving the Election 2008 field open to a bunch of RINOs like McCain and Romney.
UPDATE 080516 17:54: Dan Collins:
...The Republican Congress... has nobody to blame but itself, for being a pork-ridden, craven, lard-assed bunch of ninnyhammers.Well said!

There are moments in a story, if you have read it or seen it or heard it before, when you feel sick because you know what's about to happen but the characters don't. They may have a sense of dread, but you know...
Today is May 13, 2008. But May 13, 1940 would make a chilling scene in a movie...
