There are some things you get to right away!
AP, Which Can’t Issue a Stylebook Guidance To Mention Democratic Party Affliation in Stories About Democratic Lawbreaking, Issues An Important New Diktat to Reporters:R-r-r-r-i-i-i-g-g-g-h-h-h-t.We should continue to avoid the phrase “ground zero mosque†or “mosque at ground zero†on all platforms... The site of the proposed Islamic center and mosque is not at ground zero, but two blocks away in a busy commercial area. We should continue to say it’s “near†ground zero, or two blocks away.
Two common factually wrong talking points made by Ground Zero Mosque supporters in private, government and media circles are that:Seriously, do they think people can’t factcheck this stuff?-- The proposed location is not at Ground Zero, and
-- It is two blocks away.
Neither is true. The Burlington Coat Factory, the location for the Mosque, was hit by landing gear sheared off of Flight UA 157 when it stuck the South Tower and that gear stuck the roof of the Factory. An engine from the jet hit further beyond the Factory. The site of the Mosque is part of Ground Zero.
Second, WTC 7 which was destroyed by the attack, is only one block [away from] the the proposed Mosque location.

Breitbart thinks he got a correction:
The Political Times column last Sunday, about a generational divide over racial attitudes, erroneously linked one example of a racially charged statement to the Tea Party movement. While Tea Party supporters have been connected to a number of such statements, there is no evidence that epithets reportedly directed in March at Representative John Lewis, Democrat of Georgia, outside the Capitol, came from Tea Party members. - The New York TimesAndrew celebrates, but over at PJM, commenter Mark Buehner says you’d better parse it like Pravda in the old days:
This wasn’t a correction- it was a further calumny. So nothing to see here, folks. Might as well move along.A REAL retraction would explain that there is no evidence, despite mounds of video and audio evidence, that any racial slur was uttered by anyone that day. This pile of garbage was a non-apology apology that managed to make further unsupportable claims.
- They make an unsupported allegation about other tea-party racist statements. That’s what got them into this mess.
- They imply (quite strongly) that somebody made racist statements at the capital… but they just can’t prove 100% that they were teapartiers. Wink.

Lee Bollinger (president, Columbia University) thinks we need a government subsidy for journalists:
The institutions of the press we have inherited are the result of a mixed system of public and private cooperation. Trusting the market alone to provide all the news coverage we need would mean venturing into the unknown—a risky proposition with a vital public institution hanging in the balance.Funny he should pick that as an example:
...
There are examples of other institutions in the U.S. where state support does not translate into official control. The most compelling are our public universities and our federal programs for dispensing billions of dollars annually for research.
RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina’s public television network has turned over to state lawmakers material from its yet-to-be-aired documentary on Alcoa Inc.Details:
WRAL-TV reports UNC-TV lawyers decided not to fight a subpoena from a Senate judiciary committee because it is a public agency and may not fall under North Carolina’s 1999 press shield law protecting reporters from revealing information that hasn’t been printed or broadcast.
[State Senator Fletcher] Hartsell [chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee II] on Thursday order[ed] UNC-TV General Manager Tom Howe and legislative reporter Eszter Vajda to provide a copy of “all footage (including all interviews, B-roll and camera masters) in your possession regarding the Alcoa Corporation’s activities in Stanly County.â€Result:
UNC-TV’s appearance before the Senate judiciary’s committee Tuesday essentially transformed public television and radio reporters into investigative agents for the state. That should send cold shivers up the spine of every citizen who believes that reporters should be governmental watchdogs, not potential lapdogs.Reporters as agents of the state, huh? I imagine there are some out there who would see that as a feature, not a bug.
Oh, and Alcoa has now filed a state FOIA request for the unaired material.
LATER: Computer flakiness interrupted me while I was preparing this for posting last Thursday. Now that I’ve gotten back to it, it turns out events took an interesting turn. Leroy Towns:
At some point, the story’s reporter pieced together a new story and took it to the legislature for viewing. What’s unclear here is whether the reporter’s actions were sanctioned by UNC-TV, or whether she did it on her own without permission of the station. No credible media outlet I am aware of would sanction a reporter doing that.Even so (Towns continues):
A court might well rule that UNC-TV is a state agency and thus subject to open records laws. But a media outlet that fails to put up a stiff fight gives up its claim to be “news media.â€

Fourteen relatives fled a Carmel home and called the fire department before a lightning strike could cause major fire damage to their home this morning.Hey editors! Even if that’s a verbatim quote, isn’t it still kind of unsporting to hang it out there in front of God and everybody? (And if it’s a reporter-created interpretation, somebody needs a remedial science course.)
Carmel Fire Marshal Bruce Knott said the loud thunderclap that preceded the strike gave the extended family a head start to flee the house...

Ann Althouse (June 27th):
As an intellectual, I would like to study how that worked. I’ll write a book about it if someone will send me the raw material I need — the complete archive of the Journolist. I need a Deep Throat. I promise not to regard you as disgusting.
Breitbart raises (on June 29th):
...In the interests of journalistic transparency, and to offer the American public a unique insight in the workings of the Democrat-Media Complex, I’m offering $100,000 for the full “JournoList†archive, source fully protected. Now there’s an offer somebody can’t refuse.(Althouse reacts.)
Reynolds ratchets up the pressure (today):
(1) If, as Jonathan Chait says, there’s nothing there, why not relieve Breitbart of his bucks?
(2) If you’re worried about your own stuff being released, you don’t really safeguard it by not selling out to Breitbart — you just ensure that if one of the 400 other members does, you won’t get the $100K.
(3) Here’s your chance to be Deep Throat — and maybe to settle some scores along the way . . . .
