In Passing

No, I didn't watch it

And managed to avoid finding out who won[1] until 10:36 this morning, when I read this post[2] at Althouse.

Which, at least according to some people[3], means i’m doomed:

...a guy who can’t, or won’t, participate in that kind of sports banter among men--- is going to find himself, throughout life, on the periphery.

Isolated, decreased job prospects, diminished dating opportunities, rejected by the in-crowd, and near the bottom of the social circuit.
Sigh...

(Hint:  If you own the business, everybody chats about what you want to chat about.)

[1] Not that I made a special effort to avoid the football, but this year I had no interest in the contenders.  So last night I cooked dinner/washed up, watched Great Performances: Chuck Jones (and a couple of other features) from my recently-acquired Looney Tunes Vol.5 collection, then went to bed without watching the local news. This morning I woke up late, so only caught the 10 a.m. radio news, by which time they were through with the Superbowl and were spending all their time talking about Super Tuesday.

[2] and [3] see below the break...

Aarrrggh! Ann's page layout is broken: The comments have individual permalinks, but the when the anchor tags are generated, a “c” gets added to the “name” attribute ahead of the comment number[4].  This means that if you use the permalink, the browser winds up looking for a nonexistent anchor, can’t find it, and defaults to the top of the page. So, until it gets fixed, here are the comments I linked above, cut-n-pasted.

Mothers who don't encourage their sons to take an interest in sports, are denying those sons the chance to participate in larger culture.

When most men gather, they talk sports---football, basketball, baseball etc... a guy who cant, or won't, participate in that kind of sports banter among men--- is going to find himself, throughout life, on the periphery.

My advice for a guy that wants to get ahead would be to, if nothing else, fake an interest in sports, and be able to hold up, somewhat, your end of a sports conversation..... so as to be at least moderately socially acceptable.

Just fake it, if you have to and simply feign an interest.

Listen, I don't make the rules.

But, mark my words, a guy who openly, and very publicly, eschews sports is going to have a tough time finding any other topics of conversation amongst his own gender.

Love,
Maxine

[4] So, for example, if a comment permalink was, say,
“http://althouse.blogspot.com/2008/02/im-not-watching-superbowl.html#16”,
the “name” attribute in that post’s anchor tag should be “name="16"”.
Her site code makes it “name="c16"”, which breaks the rendering.
