Hear lightning and see thunder

The Indianapolis Star:
Fourteen relatives fled a Carmel home and called the fire department before a lightning strike could cause major fire damage to their home this morning.

Carmel Fire Marshal Bruce Knott said the loud thunderclap that preceded the strike gave the extended family a head start to flee the house...
Hey editors!  Even if that’s a verbatim quote, isn’t it still kind of unsporting to hang it out there in front of God and everybody?  (And if it’s a reporter-created interpretation, somebody needs a remedial science course.)

Academic freedom comes to Urbana

Associated Press:

The University of Illinois has fired an adjunct professor who taught courses on Catholicism after a student accused the instructor of engaging in hate speech by saying he agrees with the church’s teaching that homosexual sex is immoral.
Maybe if he’d said “they should be stoned to death” instead...

Return for regrooving

Tam, struck by a horrible thought:

...Is the phone going to ring and I’m going to answer it and say “I have miles to go and promises to keep,” in a flat monotone and then go do something horrible, like vote for Andre Carson, all because of some crap they taught me in second grade?
Yep, that’s pretty horrible, all right...

Zero THEIR budget, too

“Black” is “White,” if it means more power for us!  Dept
Mission creep:
...The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is classifying milk as oil because it contains a percentage of animal fat...
Meaning storage of milk will be treated like storage of oil, requiring engineering certification of milk tanks, construction of “secondary containment structures” (i.e., dikes) around them, and testing for underground leakage.

Of course, the enviros think it’s a great idea:
Gayle Miller, legislative director of Sierra Club Michigan Chapter, said agricultural pollution probably is the nation's most severe chronic problem when it comes to water pollution.

...“The fact that it’s biodegradable is irrelevant if people die as a result of cryptosporidium, beaches close for E. coli and fish are killed.”
Milk = crypto and E coli?  Who knew?
